Image of the Filipino; Tata Selo
In Rogelio R. Sikat's story, Tata Selo, a peasant murdered his oppressive landlord, and an investigation of the crime reveals that he killed not only to protest his eviction from the land he has been tilling but mainly to avenge the dishonor the landlord had brought upon his family by sexually violating his teenage daughter who worked as a maidservant in the landlord’s home.
I feel pity to Tata Selo, Yes! he murdered someone but in valid reason. I feel sad knowing that poor people deprived of human rights. Sadly, the reality of life in some cases is horrifying. I feel sorry for Tata Selo for encountering brutalities such as being physically ambushed, defending himself knowing that his precious daughter is a victim of sexual abuse and his land taken from him because of poverty. I feel emotional while imagining the events happened in the short story. Imagining those events melt my heart because it feels like Tata Selo and his daughter touches my heart and opens my eyes to see and feel what life they have.
This fiction presents the reality of justice. Justice is a principle of right action but in reality justice is a battle between the destitute and wealth. Poor people has no power to protect themselves because rich people has the power to control justice. "Justice is only for wealthy people" Tata Selo can't defend himself due to poverty and people sympathy is not favor in him. I wonder that a victim must powerful to be considered as a victim or innocent.
I'm Kriztel Gadly Arellano a college student in Batangas State University. As a young person I will not be the reason of justice inequality and abuse. I will promote human rights equality and anti abuse by doing this blog and by posting in my social media accounts about awareness in abuse and justice inequality specially the mentally and physically effects of it, for order to understand and raise awareness to students, the readers of this blog and to my followers. I know it is a small thing that I can do but I believe small things are really matter.
I think that when you're financially unstable no one cares about you. While reading the story I realize that if you're poor you don't have the right to speak or defend yourself because in the end the powerful one is in favor. I'm thinking about how wealthy people manipulate justice and how unlucky Tata Selo and his daughter. I'm also thinking how people can treat an old man that way. While thinking their is something stuck in my mind that made me realize things. The word stuck in my mind is "heartless" it made me realize how unfair the world.
